Description
"When people act as if this world were the only world and when they make no provision for eternity, it is then that our Lord in His mercy sends them temporal calamities in order to take their hearts from the inordinate love of wealth and luxury. When people are blessed with abundance of the goods of this world, they as a general rule have no desire for heavenly things, and they make their paradise of this earth with its empty pleasures and unstable wealth. It might be expected, if people had deep faith, that they would give thanks to God for His blessings instead of using these very gifts of God to offend Him and to set their hearts upon them, instead of giving their hearts to God. Avarice is a species of idolatry. The pagans worshipped idols as symbols of nature's gifts and as an excuse to gratify their passions. Worldlings, or those who think only of this world, give their hearts and their thoughts to the things of this world...." -Father H. O'Laverty
